2. Rejecting Lies and Receiving Blessings

“Do not be deceived my brothers and sisters. Every good gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” James 1:17

I was recently reading back on an entry in my journal dated 20th September 2014. I was in a really content and happy place in life. I was delighted with the job I had, the colleagues I worked with, my friends, the house and city I lived in, the opportunities of growth I had, the peace I felt surrounded by. However, in the midst of it all, I had this small voice inside of me saying that it was all too good to be true. Sure, God had poured out His blessings on me with abundance for that particular season. But did that mean that bad things would follow as life can’t be fine and dandy all the time? Would things have to get worse to ‘balance out’ how ideal everything was in that moment?

I know. I was being completely ridiculous, not allowing myself to simply enjoy the blessings that were bestowed upon me during that time. Why was I constantly waiting for the spell to be broken?

God spoke to me that day to the fears I was allowing myself to ruminate on, and said, “No! That’s a lie. You are my child. I want to bless you- I want to shower you in blessings and with good things.”

Here is an excerpt from my journal:

“My God is a generous God. He doesn’t trick us. He doesn’t give us good things to then balance it out by giving us bad life situations. He is only full of goodness. Yes, life will not always be perfect. Life comes with its struggles and challenges. But Abba is a constant throughout it all- full of goodness, mercy and grace. He is a generous God… He knows our desires and gives us more than we can ever dream or hope for. And I am so blessed and grateful to have experienced that… If [it] comes to an end, it is because better things lie ahead, the plan God has for my future lies elsewhere… My God is a good God. And he’s a generous and loving God. In ALL things”.

What transpired in the following month was a sudden chain of events that secured my position in the life setting I was and an abundance of God’s grace carrying me through obstacles and hurdles, as though they were nothing! It’s only in the reading back of these entries that I remember the initial doubts preceding His ongoing outpouring of blessings. He really does want to shower us with goodness. He really does know what is best for us. The knowledge we have at any given moment, is nothing compared to what God can see.

He blesses us, so that we can bless others.

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” 2 Corinthians 9:8

I hope this is encouraging to someone. It encourages me to look back and see those times when God poured out his blessings- to remember how much He loves His child and that His plans for us only come from good.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I have often felt the same way, especially since 2 years ago my fiancé was fighting a rare and deadly form of cancer. By the grace of God and his wonderful team of doctors he was healed. We are getting married in 7 months and sometimes I find myself thinking this is too good to be true and I keep waiting for something to ruin it. Your post was a great reminder of God’s goodness and mercy!
